Decommissioning Line Flush & Chemical Optimisation
Project Overview
As part of the NJV Project decommissioning phase, Omega Analytic was engaged to provide specialist analytical and field support during line flushing operations and preservative chemical injection. The scope focused on ensuring effective cleaning of process lines while maintaining optimal chemical dosing to protect assets during shutdown and preservation.
The project required real-time decision-making, rapid laboratory turnaround, and close coordination between field technicians and operations personnel.
Scope of Work
Omega Analytic Specialists delivered the following key services:
Decommissioning Line Flush Monitoring
On-site sampling during active flushing operations
Monitoring of water quality parameters (Oil in Water concentration)
Verification of cleanliness criteria prior to preservation
Chemical Monitoring & Optimisation
Assessment of preservative chemical concentration during injection
Adjustment recommendations to ensure target residual levels were achieved
Compatibility checks with remaining process fluids
High-Frequency Sampling
Multiple samples collected within short time intervals (hourly and sub-hourly during peak flushing)
Rapid field testing combined with laboratory confirmation
Continuous data reporting to operations for real-time adjustments
Challenges
The Project presented several operational complexities:
Short Operational Window: Flushing and preservation activities were conducted over compressed timeframes, requiring immediate analytical feedback.
Variable Line Conditions: Injection pump down-time led to fluctuating water quality parameters during early flush stages.
Chemical Stability Control: Preservative chemicals required precise dosing to maintain effective inhibition without overdosing.
Dynamic Process Conditions: Flow rates and injection volumes changed throughout the operation, impacting concentration stability.
Omega Analytic’s Approach
To address these challenges, Omega Analytic implemented:
Field-Based Analytical Support – Technicians stationed on-site to perform rapid testing with 24 hours coverage and minimise turnaround time.
Structured Sampling Regime – Pre-determined sampling intervals intensified during critical flush phases.
Real-Time Communication – Immediate reporting of results to commissioning and chemical injection teams.
Data Trending & Optimisation – Continuous tracking of Oil in Water and preservative concentration trends over the period of flushing to monitor and refine injection rates.
This integrated approach ensured chemical concentrations remained within specification while confirming flushing effectiveness before progressing to preservation.
Outcomes
Successful completion of top-side decommissioning line flush within the planned schedule
Achievement of target cleanliness criteria prior to preservation
Optimised preservative chemical dosing, reducing chemical waste and mitigating corrosion risk
No environmental non-conformances
Safe execution with zero incidents
